At Southern Connecticut Dermatology we offer comprehensive treatment for all of your medical dermatology needs with current and cutting-edge methodologies to treat all of your skin conditions. Skin cancer is the most prevalent of all cancers. It is estimated that more than one million Americans develop skin cancer every year. The best defense against skin cancer is to protect the skin against over exposure to sunlight. While fair-skinned people are at particularly high risk of developing skin cancer, darker skin types are also susceptible.
Routine self-examinations and periodic skin exam-inations by a health professional are the best way for early detection and a cure for skin cancer. A skin biopsy reveals if the lesion is cancerous and Dr. Evans performs a variety of surgical procedures to treat the cancer, depending on the diagnosis and the needs of the individual patient. PHOTODYNAMIC THERAPY FOR PRE-CANCERS Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) is a unique and thorough treatment approach to pre-skin cancers, called Actinic Keratoses. The treatment is performed with the topical application of a photosensitizing agent called Levulan which is then activated with an appropriate wavelength of light. This is also known as "ALA/PDT treatment". This therapy treats sun damaged pre-cancerous actinic keratoses. Sun damage, fine lines, blotchy pigmentation, and red spots are also improved because of the unique effect of Levulan and the light on photodamage. ALA/PDT treatment also has the unique ability to shrink oil glands and effectively treat stubborn acne.
There are many treatments available for acne. At Southern Connecticut Dermatology, we formulate a customized plan based on the quality and severity of your acne and your treatment preferences and experiences. We use a variety of treatments including oral and topical therapies, proper skin care education, facials, microdermabrasion, and chemical peels, with Accutane offered as a last resort option. Another option for acne treatment which we offer is light therapy with Blue Light Treatments. The Blue light is a visible light source used to treat acne on the face, chest, or back areas. These virtually painless treatments can be used in place of or as an adjunct to conventional acne therapy, possibly reducing the need for antibiotics, Accutane, and even topical treatments. The Blue light may be used for teens and adults alike and is safe and effective. Whodunnit???? Food allergies or sensitivities are estimated to be present in 60% of the American population. Symptoms may include not only the typical asthma, sneezing, and hives; but also more chronic symptoms of eczema, skin rashes, fatigue, and depression. Reactions may be immediate or delayed making detection more challenging. We offer comprehensive food allergy and sensitivity testing consisting of a simple blood test which screens for dozens of antibodies to food allergens, spices, and an array of other ingestants. Rotation and elimination diets may be implemented as a treatment and cure for many chronic ailments. Allergic contact dermatitis is a common inflammatory skin rash which occurs when substances to which you are allergic come in contact with the skin. At Southern Connecticut Dermatology we offer the T.R.U.E. Test patch skin testing and additional comprehensive skin allergy panels to test for a variety of skin allergens which may cause contact dermatitis. Patch testing consists of taping a series of panels which are worn on the back for several days and then removed and read after 72-96 hours. There is no discomfort or scratch testing involved to detect these types of skin allergies. The findings from these tests can reveal common allergens which when exposure is removed may result in the eradication of chronic skin rashes and other symptoms. Severe primary underarm sweating is a very common condition often poorly managed with topical therapies. This condition known as Hyperhidrosis can spoil wardrobes and result in stained and damaged clothing and excessive dry-cleaning bills. Today there is a simple solution with injections of Botox into the affected underarm sites. Treatments typically result in effective elimination or reduction of underarm sweating for a period of 6 months. Treatments are usually painless with the prior application of a topical anesthetic. Health insurance may often cover the cost for these medical treatments.
